The Beauty Around Us: My Favorite Charleston Area Photos from January and February 2025
By Amy Hill
As a portrait and personal branding photographer based in Charleston, SC, my greatest joy comes from capturing people in the moments that define their lives—whether it’s a graduating senior, a business owner looking to make an impact, a man gathering the courage to ask the big question, or a couple celebrating 50 years of love. There’s something magical about freezing time in an image, giving people a glimpse of who they are in that moment—whether for personal memories or professional growth.
But my love for photography extends far beyond portraits.
I find just as much inspiration in the world around me—the quiet beauty of nature and wildlife, the rhythm of city streets, and the drama of contrasting light in landscapes and architecture. Whether it’s the delicate curve of a bird’s wings in flight, the way golden light spills between buildings, or the stillness of the marsh at sunrise, photography allows me to pause, observe, and appreciate the fleeting moments that often go unnoticed.
This collection of images from the first two months of 2025 showcases the beauty of Charleston—a place where every season offers something special to appreciate.
Being in Nature Grounds Me
Being in nature makes me happy. I feel fully present—alert, scanning my surroundings, noticing the way light filters through the trees, the subtle shift of colors in the sky, or the delicate balance of a bird on a branch. It’s in these quiet moments that I truly appreciate the small details that bring a scene to life. On January 22, that shift was even more magical as a rare snowfall dusted Charleston, transforming familiar landscapes into something completely new.
Nature photography teaches me patience. I wait for the light, for the wind to settle, for the right movement or for the perched bird to take off. It’s the same approach I bring to senior portraits and personal branding photography—capturing those perfect in-between moments that feel natural and real.
Street Photography – The Beauty of Motion
While nature photography is about stillness, street photography is about movement. I love the challenge of capturing energy—the way light spills between buildings, the contrast of bright storefronts against the muted tones of cobblestone streets, and the rhythm of people going about their day. Unlike portrait sessions, I don’t get to pose people—I have to anticipate, observe, and react.
These shots are from The Second Sunday on King, January 12, 2025. First: A young boy in a sweatshirt reading "Optimism" standing perfectly at the corner of a building. His curious gaze meets my camera, ice cream drips on his shirt adding a charming imperfection. Second: A group of Citadel cadets, dressed in their signature blue-gray uniforms and caps, march in unison down King Street.
Sunrise and Sunset – The Light I Chase
If I could photograph only two times of day, it would be the time just before the sunrise and sunset—when colors change, shadows stretch, and the sky transforms slowly. Light changes everything, and I never get tired of chasing it.
