Documentary Family Photography in Charleston, SC

What Makes Documentary Photography Different from a Traditional Family Session?

Most family sessions are built around direction. Everyone lines up, looks at the camera, and smiles on cue. Documentary photography works the opposite way.
Completely unscripted. I follow along quietly and photograph what actually happens. No posing, no direction, no stopping to look at the camera. The goal is to capture how your family actually lives, not how they perform for a camera. These sessions work best at home or somewhere your family feels completely natural.

What a Documentary Session Actually Looks Like

It might be your kids making breakfast together while you drink your first cup of coffee. It might be everyone piled on the couch on a Sunday morning. It might be a lake weekend where I follow along from the dock to the boat to the dinner table. The location and the activity are yours. I just show up and photograph it.

The images from a documentary session look different from portraits. They are messier, more layered, and more honest. Years from now they will show you things you forgot. The way your youngest laughed at something your oldest said. The way your partner looked at your kids when nobody was watching.

Family Reunions and Multi-Generational Gatherings

Multi-generational gatherings are some of my favorite sessions to document. Whether it is a reunion, a milestone birthday, or just everyone together for the weekend, I photograph the layered connections and spontaneous moments that make those days worth remembering. These are not posed beach portraits. They are your family, documented.

How It Works

We start with a conversation about your family and what you want to capture. From there I help plan the session around your natural routines, your home, a favorite spot, or a family gathering. On the day itself I arrive and get to work. Some moments I photograph from a distance. Others I get close enough to catch the details nobody else notices. Two weeks later you receive your gallery.

Session Options

The Hybrid Session | $900
2 Hours. My favorite approach for families who are curious about documentary photography but still want a few classic portraits in their gallery. We can start or end with directed portraits, a few posed family photos, the kind that work for a holiday card, and then spend the rest of the session in documentary mode. We plan an activity in advance so you have something natural to do while I photograph it. Your gallery includes both polished portraits and real unscripted moments.

The Glimpse | $1,100
3 Hours. A documentary session where I follow your lead and document the energy of your day as it happens. We can set aside a few minutes at the end for guided portraits if you would like them.

The Immersion | $1,300
4 Hours. An unhurried documentary experience. Time for everyone to settle in and forget about the camera. A quick window for intentional portraits can be built in if requested.

The Complete Chronicle | $2,000
8 Hours with your family, start to finish. A way to capture your life exactly as it is right now. Classic lifestyle portraits can be included at any point if they naturally fit the flow of the day.
